The British Shorthair is said to have originated from the domestic cat of ancient Rome, and are believed to have been brought with the Romans when they invaded and ruled England two thousand years ago. Throughout the years, these cats bred among themselves in the relatively secluded island - possibly cross-breeding with local wild cats. During the nineteenth century, the interest in pedigreed cats flourished in Victorian Britain. As exotic cats from the far and near orient arrived, some breeders decided to recreate the local British Blue as a pedigree in its own right. In 1871, British Blues were shown as a breed in the Crystal Palace cat show. With the development of the new cat breeds, interest in the British Blue declined, but the breed's revival after the Second World War encouraged British breeders to make improvements by crossbreeding with Persian cats. With the crossbreeding of the Persian the longhair gene was introduced to the British cat. With the British Longhair you do not always get a 'longhair' cat. The coat is usually semi-long thick and lush.


The British Cats Disposition.........
The British Blue was made famous by the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland and the Puss in Boots. Thus the smile and the plush look of fur are so-called trademarks of this breed. Because of its easy-going nature and intelligence, it has become a favorite of animal trainers, for use in Hollywood films and television commercials. The British shorthair has a short plush coat with a luxurious feel, which is very easy to groom while the longhair which is really a Semi-Longhair version is just slightly longer. British cats have blue eyes when born but as they grow the kittens eye color changes and becomes an awesome copper/orange color.
